Sonamu globe - Korean/Australian vv.
Korean/ Australian or Australian/Korean.
Listen, for those who don’t feel or look entirely Korean or Australian—this sticker is for you! You might embody a bit of both, whether by birth, environment, or honorary status.
Sonamu is a type of pine tree that originates from Korea and Japan. Its Latin name is ‘Pinus Densiflora’, and it is also designated as the national tree of Korea. It symbolizes longevity (장수), spirit (기개), sincerity (성실), conviction (지조), life (생명), and purity (순결).
Although I've spent most of my life in Australia (a fantastic home), I still identify as Korean, eat at least one Korean meal daily, speak Korean with my friends and family, and answer all my friends' K-questions. Yet, I also love my Vegemite toast, sport an Aussie accent, use slang, and know exactly what to say when someone exclaims, “There’s a bear in there...”
So, I proudly embrace both cultures. I have never been confused or unhappy about my dual identity, but I cannot choose just one to describe myself. I will always look Korean, yet feel foreign when I'm in Korea. If you feel the same, this one's for you. Don’t fight it, embrace it.
I’m on a quest to expand this series to more countries, mixing elements from various cultures—not just Korea—since other expats likely feel the same.
